Richard Kammen, Keynote Speaker
CDAM is thrilled to announce that Richard Kammen, of Kammen and Moudy (Indianapolis) is our Spring Conference keynote speaker. Attorney Kammen, a renowned criminal defense attorney for more than 45 years, represents those accused of complex crimes. Many are familiar with Kammen since his appointment in 2008 as learned counsel for the defense of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged mastermind of the 2000 USS Cole suicide bombing. Kammen stood fast, under constant threat of arrest, when he discovered the government compromised attorney-client privacy by CIA eavesdropping at Guantanamo Bay.
Said Kammen, “I believe that we, criminal defense lawyers, have a rare privilege to stand between the prosecution, with its awesome and sometimes irresponsibly used power, and an individual whose freedom or life may be threatened.”
Kammen’s topic, Defending the Despised or Unpopular, will include strategies and tactics for humanizing clients and the ever-important ethical issues that attorneys face in such cases.
Attorney Kammen has deep Michigan connections. He served as CDAM Trial College faculty in the program’s beginning years and has served as learned death penalty counsel in local federal death penalty cases.
The CDAM Spring conference is one week earlier than in the past: March 1-3, 2018, at the AUBURN Hills Marriott Pontiac, 3600 Centerpoint Parkway.
