Jury Selection and Bias Video Seminar featuring

    Marjorie Russell

Marj Russell with CDAM Past President Marshall Tauber

    About Marjorie Russell

Marjorie Russell is one of the founders of the CDAM Trial College, retired law professor, and criminal defense lawyer. She is now a case development, jury and trial consultant for plaintiffs in civil claims of all kinds, as well as for the accused in multi-defendant federal prosecutions, including death penalty, murder and white collar crimes; and in state court capital and life felonies, and claims of sexual assault and abuse. Whether in active cases or in continuing education seminars, Marjorie’s perspective on case and trial preparation employs a blend of action methods, storytelling techniques, brain science, and a good dose of humanity. She is a specialist at finding the story, values and connections that move jurors to action. Once discovered, Marjorie can guide the lawyer and witnesses in presenting their story in a compelling and memorable form. She has been active on the staff of the Trial Lawyers College founded by Gerry Spence and others, since 1996. Many of her techniques have been honed in the amazing laboratory of the TLC, for which she is grateful.

    Fearless Defense:

Putting Your Client on the Stand

    by Karl P. Numinen

One of the most critical decisions you will make in every criminal trial is whether to put your client on the stand. Through the use of examples of actual client testimony, Karl will give you all the analytical tools to need the next time you have to make that important decision. Webinar participants will receive Karl’s published monograph, “How to Prepare Your Client to Testify at Trial,” as well as a detailed deconstruction of actual trial testimony that thoroughly examines the principles of looping, transitions, preemptive strikes, control, theme, theory, and rehabilitation.  This Webinar will guide you in your trial preparation so you can fearlessly put your client on the stand and not on the spot.

    Roadside Drug Testing -

    What You Need To Know

    by Patrick Barone

In this one hour zoom presentation, Mr. Barone will dissect recent changes to MCL 257.62a, 257.625r, and 257.625s, all of which address roadside DUI investigations. Most notably, these laws address Michigan’s roadside oral fluid drug testing program. Doing Our Best Work for Clients Under Less-Than-Great Circumstances: Remote Prep and Practice Tips For Courtroom Advocacy in 2020

    By Marla McCowan,

MIDC Director of Training, Outreach and Support

For several months all of us have been meeting the challenges of being at home and working remotely to ensure our clients get the best representation possible.  Many courts have continued to hold substantive hearings during the pandemic, and lately even some trials have resumed.  But even if we go to court periodically, our primary work and other obligations are being facilitated from home through a virtual connection. This situation will stay that way for several months to come.

Join us for a one-hour presentation to learn how to brainstorm trial strategy with colleagues online, create checklists for your court hearings if some/all participants are not in person, basic tech tips for using zoom (and a few other helpful tools), and a completely judgment-free Q & A zone for all of the new technology we are finding ourselves forced to use (and if we can’t help, we will follow up with the answer asap!).

Trial Skills and Advanced Case Development

    August 15-19, 2021

We are emerging from an unprecedented period in the practice of law . . . where we were facing pixels instead of people. And if the gathering has been in a shared, in-person space, the faces have been masked. This year’s four-and-a-half-day program will address what it now means to “make an appearance” . . . be it voir dire, laying foundations, making objections, opening statements, examinations, or closing arguments.

Whether remote or live, courtroom communication is interactive, so this intensive program is primarily “on your feet” training to provide attendees a real feel for utilizing the techniques, which cannot happen taking notes during lectures. Programming will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to give students the full benefit of training with some of the best and most experienced criminal defense attorneys in Michigan, as well as internationally recognized trial consultant and CLE trainer, Joshua Karton.
